University ice machine not making enough ice: refrigerant leak found and repaired.
A real commercial service call at a university in Boca Raton. The ice machine was not producing ice properly. Diagnosis found a leak at the high-pressure line access valve, and the system was repaired, evacuated and recharged in about one hour.
Customer complaint
The ice machine was not producing ice properly.
A university in Boca Raton contacted MSA Appliance Repair because its commercial ice machine was no longer making ice the way it should.
Low ice production can come from water flow, scale, sensors or controls, but it can also point to a problem in the sealed refrigeration system. Our technician connected digital gauges and checked the refrigeration side of the machine.
01
Diagnosis
Testing showed that the access valve on the high-pressure line was leaking at the seal inside the valve. The system was losing refrigerant, which is why the machine could not make ice properly.
02
Repair
The refrigerant was fully recovered from the system, the leaking valve was replaced with a new one, and the system was evacuated with a vacuum pump.
03
Result
The system was recharged with the correct amount of refrigerant. The complete repair took about one hour on site.

Refrigerant leak repair on a university ice machine.
Why this case matters: a small leak at a service valve can slowly drain refrigerant and reduce ice production. Recovering the refrigerant, replacing the valve, evacuating the system and recharging to the correct amount fixes the cause instead of simply adding refrigerant. Refrigerant work is performed by an EPA Section 608 certified technician.
