Dryer Won't Start

Basic checks for a dryer that will not begin a cycle and common faults involving power, doors, thermal protection and controls.

If a dryer won't start, begin with power, the door and the control lock. If the display lights but the drum won't turn, the problem is usually the door switch, thermal fuse, belt or motor. A dryer that is completely dead, with power confirmed, points to a fuse, the controls or the wiring.

Safe first checks

Start here before scheduling service.

01Close the door firmly. A worn latch or door switch keeps the dryer from starting.
02Look for a control lock or child lock (often a padlock icon). On most models, holding the lock button for about three seconds releases it.
03Make sure the plug is pushed fully into the outlet; heavy dryer plugs can work loose.
04Check the household breaker and reset it only once if it is clearly tripped.
05Press Start and listen for a click or hum; that detail helps with diagnosis.

Do not bypass door switches, thermal fuses or other safety devices to force the dryer to run.

Control lock enabled

The display lights and buttons beep, but nothing happens. Check for a lock icon.

Door switch or latch

If the dryer starts when you press hard on the door, the switch or latch is worn.

Blown thermal fuse

On many models, a blown thermal fuse stops the dryer from starting at all, and it usually blows because the vent is restricted.

Broken belt or failed motor

A motor that hums while the drum stays still, or a drum that spins freely by hand, points to the belt, idler pulley or motor.

Start switch, control board or wiring

If power is confirmed and none of the above apply, the start switch, timer or control board needs testing.

My dryer hums but won't turn. What does that mean?+

Usually a broken belt, a seized drum roller or a motor that can't start. Turn the dryer off right away; running a stalled motor can damage it.

Can I reset a dryer that won't start?+

Switch off the breaker or unplug the dryer for one minute, then try again. Do this only once; if it still won't start, book a diagnosis instead of repeatedly cycling power.
