Washer Not Spinning

Washers are designed not to spin when something is wrong: the drum is still full of water, the load is unbalanced or the lid lock can't confirm it is closed. Most no-spin problems trace back to one of those three before it becomes a motor or transmission issue.

Safe first checks

Start here before scheduling service.

01Look inside the drum. If water is still there, the washer can't spin until it drains; see our washer not draining guide first.
02If the load is one heavy item, such as a bath mat or comforter, add a few towels to balance it, then run Drain & Spin.
03Confirm the door or lid closes and locks normally.
04Check that the washer is level and doesn't rock when you press diagonally on the top corners.
05Write down any error code shown on the display.

Safety note

Unplug the washer before reaching into the drum or looking underneath, and never put a hand in the drum while it is moving.

What usually causes it

Water still in the drum

A washer won't spin until it drains, so a clogged filter or failed pump stops both.

Unbalanced load

One heavy item or a very small load can trigger the balance sensor, so the washer tries to spin, stops and tries again.

Lid lock or door lock

If the lock clicks repeatedly or never engages, the control won't allow the spin.

Worn suspension rods or springs

A washer that bangs or walks during the spin and then stops may have worn suspension parts.

Belt, coupler, shifter or motor

A drum that won't turn at all, with no water inside, may have a broken belt, coupler or shifter, or a motor fault.
